So I do some part time SEO work for a few of the local companies that specialize in it and I love talking to these guys. I just spent a good 30 minutes on the phone my favorite guy of all. Blaine with Kid Carson Media here in Louisville.
I told him about my blog where I’ll be ranting about my daily frustrations with the industry and customers that it’s sometimes ill winds blow up to my virtual door.
Immediately he starts telling me about his theory on how some potential customers are time vampires. I have to say he nailed it. That’s truly how us in the business see them. So it got me thinking about the last one I dealt with and how it contrasts with the real customers that call me. You know! The ones that know what they want and where they want it to take them and are willing to spend the money that will get them there. While all the time knowing how they will profit from it.
So the last time vampire I had actually got me for about 6 hours time altogether. And that 6 hours of my life can never be retrieved. I’m not going to go into the details about how he did it. But I should have realized early on that he was “One of Them” and just gotten away from him. But nooo! I think I have to try to make everybody that calls my next new customer. After my talk this morning with Blaine I think that’s all going to be changing.
He referred me to his own companies site and told me go to read the search engine optimization, and web design topic pages and how they’re worded. I was blown away. The site actually tells people in a kind way that if they’re not serious to not bother calling them. According to him they also offer a free SEO report for local business but don’t give one to just anybody.. He says it works to weed a lot of the time vampires out and that things have gotten much better since they worded their site this way.
I’ll be doing more part time SEO work for them now
So Blaine has invited me to sell him a block of my time on a weekly basis and I’ve accepted his offer. And I’m going to take his advice about people that call me for my services and just flat out ask them up front like they do at his company the hard questions like. How much is your monthly budget for Internet Marketing? What percentage of your gross profit do you reinvest into advertising? How soon do you plan on starting your campaign? Things like that.
My problem is I’m not good at just flat out asking those kinds of questions. They seem to invasive to me and I told Blaine that. He laughed and told me that serious people understand why he needs to know these things, and would be puzzled as to why, if he didn’t ask them.
Today is the day that I change. No more time vampires that suck up my hours and cause me to not have the time to spend on my good clients. Like Blaine!!
